It would be unfortunate if a University acquired a new library management system but found that it would neither connect to its existing barcode scanners nor work on its existing version of Windows Server. A Technical Consultant is the person who would help to avoid such misfortune.

The job is to understand the platform integration, resource and peripheral specifications for any anticipated solution. One can then determine whether the existing infrastructure is suitable and provide guidance on necessary changes. This person may also advise on alterations to existing IT infrastructure in the pursuit of greater reliability or scalability of key operational products.

The Technical Consultant can be found working within a corporate or working for an IT product vendor supporting their sales activity. In both cases strong communication and presentation skills are vital for this role.

General skills and aptitude

• Excellent and broad knowledge of IT
• Interest in both hardware and Software
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Comfortable presenting to mixed audiences with tools such as Microsoft PowerPoint
