Most mobile phones have GPS these days. After a mooch about town you find yourself a bit peckish and fancy a bite to eat. Use your phone to find a decent café near by. Although GPS doesn’t stand for Great Person Selector, it locates your best mate who is not far away. In fact why not post your plan on Facebook or Twitter to get your other friends who are at home in on the action. But this tracking device works both ways and isn’t so great if you’re supposed to be at school or work or tucking into bangers and mash lovingly prepared by your mum at home.

Microsoft’s product is called Window’s Live Mesh. Install the software on each device, add folders to your mesh and the folders are automatically synchronised. You can share with friends and family and see their online status. Amazon.com is offering a pay-as-you-go service.
