Girls in IT event at Infosys

On the 20th October, 25 female ICT students aged between 14-16 from Kingsford Community School and Walthamstow Academy attended an event at Infosys offices in Canary Wharf. The aim of the event was to inspire and inform girls about careers in IT and to give them an insight in to the real world of work.

During the day the students heard from a range of Inofsys employees about what the role of the company and the clients it works with. Infosys employees spoke about their role at the company and how they got to work there. The girls were given the opportunity to ask questions to find out more about pathways into IT.

During the interactive workshop where the students were tasked with binary code challenges to help them understand the foundation levels of building a website, they worked alongside Infosys employees, helping them to develop skills in areas such as team working and communication. The girls experienced the impact of globalisation on the IT industry by partaking in a teleconference with four female graduates based in Hyderabad in India. The students heard about what it’s like to work in the IT industry in India and their experiences to date. The day culminated with a tour of the offices where the students got to see first-hand the working environment of a company such as Infosys.

This event is part of the e-skills UK’s IT Ambassadors scheme where addressing the gender balance in the IT Industry is a key objective. Infosys are an early adopter of this scheme which supports IT employers and employees engage with schools.

Srikanth Lyengar, Associate Vice President at Infosys said, "Infosys is delighted to be partnering with e-skills UK. We believe it is extremely important to inspire students, especially girls, to view technology careers as fulfilling and enjoyable. We view the e-skills program as a critical step in enhancing the future competitiveness of the UK economy, and we look forward to partnering on many more such sessions in the future."
